Phuket now has more than one way to buy trading cards, and they are not equivalent.

There is a physical card shop in Patong, Kira Cards, where you can walk in, look at sealed product and singles, and pay in person. Other sellers on the island operate only through Shopee, Facebook or Instagram, with no premises you can visit.

The rule that matters most is simple. If you cannot inspect the item before paying, only buy sealed product, and only from a seller with a verifiable track record. For singles, always try to see the card first.

Patong is the practical centre of the island for this. It has the most accommodation, the easiest transport links, and it is where you will find a physical trading card shop.

Japanese sealed product is frequently cheaper in Thailand than English sealed product, because it travels a shorter distance and arrives in larger quantities. If you are indifferent between prints, Japanese usually gives you more packs for the same money.

Singles are priced against international references but adjusted for local supply. A card that is common overseas can be scarce here simply because nobody has opened that set locally.

Be wary of any price that is dramatically below the market. On sealed product it usually means resealed or a fake print run. On singles it almost always means a counterfeit.

This is the part most guides skip, and it is the one that costs tourists money.

Counterfeit Pokemon cards are sold openly at several markets and beach-front stalls in Phuket, usually as loose singles in sleeves, often presented as rare or vintage. The giveaways are a texture that feels too smooth, colours that are slightly off, a back print with the wrong blue, and holo patterns that look flat under angled light.

Sealed product is harder to fake convincingly but not impossible. Check that shrink wrap is tight and factory-cut, that seams are even, and that any Japanese product carries the correct distributor markings.

If a stall cannot tell you which set a card is from, walk away. A real shop can tell you the set, the card number, the rarity and the print language without looking it up.

Online works well for sealed product. You know exactly what a sealed box is, delivery within Thailand is fast, and you are not paying for a shopfront.

Walking into a shop is worth it for three things. Singles, because you can inspect centring, edges and surface before you pay. Advice, because a good shop will tell you when buying singles beats opening boxes. And immediacy, because you leave with the card.
